I am trying to access a database from the Library homepage, but I am being prompted to login with a Google account or an Ebsco account. What should I do?

Answer

This problem happens most frequently for R-MC faculty and staff who are working off campus and using GlobalProtect, a VPN client (virtual private network), to access shared drives on campus. ITS probably asked you to install the software when you said you wanted to work from home. The VPN confuses our library's databases and makes them think you belong to a different network (not R-MC).

On a PC if you're signed in, it looks like this:

GlobalProtect icon

On a Mac you'll see "Microsoft Remote Desktop" at the top of your screen.

To fix this you will need to sign out of the VPN software, GlobalProtect.

  • On PC's that can be done in the lower right part of your screen. Click on the GlobalProtect icon, and select "Disconnect".
  • On an Apple computer, move your mouse to the top of the screen and select Microsoft Remote Desktop drop-down, and click “Quit Remote Desktop”

After signing out of the VPN, please close your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc.) and reopen to start using the library.
