How to I get a journal article or book from another library, or, how do I use Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Answer

First off, here's a quick video on how to request an item from another library, using the Interlibrary Loan system (ILL).

There are two general ways to request items.

  1. Through finding the item in one of our electronic resources/databases, or
  2. Working from a citation.

Below are the steps for both processes.

Finding an item through electronic resources/database

  1. Using our catalog search box, you can set your results to include things we do not own/have access to. The button is on the left side of the screen once you start searching, or below your search boxes in advanced search screen.
    other library button 1
    other library button 2
  2. Once you find an item the "Request via ILL" button. It looks like this:
    Request ILL button
  3. When you click the Request button, you may be asked to sign in with your R-MC credentials.
Once you've signed in, your ILL request form will already be filled out for you! Simply click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to place your request!

Working from a citation

Depending on how long and complicated your citation is, it might be worth your time to search for your known item in our catalog and have the "Request via ILL" button do the work for you. If not you can fill out the ILL form from scratch.

To fill out a request manually:

  1. Login to your library account, sometimes referred to as Tipasa.
  2. Click on the "Create Request" button, it looks like this:
    make request button
  3. On the next screen you will need to select the type of material your citation is referring to: Book/Chapter of Book, Journal Article or "Other Material" - you can contact your subject librarian to get help in determining what you're looking for.
  4. Once you select the type of resource you're requesting, you need to fill out as much information in the details section as you can - some of the fields are required.
  5. When you have all the item's information entered, simply click the "Submit Request" button at the bottom of the page.
